What is AI referral traffic?
AI referral traffic is the visits that reach your website when someone clicks a link inside an AI assistant's answer. Analytics tools can label it only when the visit carries a recognizable referrer. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks are counted inside normal Google search traffic and cannot be separated from it.
How analytics tools count it
Google Analytics 4 added an AI Assistant channel on 13 May 2026, according to Google's release notes. A visit gets the medium ai-assistant when its referrer matches a recognized AI assistant, and the campaign is shown as (ai-assistant). The note names ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude as examples, not as a complete list. A visit that arrives without a referrer cannot be matched this way and is recorded under another channel, often Direct.
Google's AI features are a special case
Google says clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall search traffic and appear in the Web search type of the Search Console Performance report. Its Generative AI performance report shows impressions, not clicks. So visits from AI Overviews and AI Mode land in your Google totals.
Traffic is not visibility
A brand can be named in many answers and still get few clicks, because the answer already contains what the reader wanted (see zero-click). Referral numbers tell you who clicked; they do not tell you in which answers you were named, or at what position. That is why visibility is measured by asking the questions directly, as in prompt tracking, and traffic by analytics. Use both and compare, rather than treating one as a proxy for the other.
