How to appear in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Every paid plan

To appear in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no extra requirements and no special files or schema. The answers are built from several related searches (query fan-out), so pages that rank for the sub-questions of a buyer's question have the best chance to be linked.

How Google picks the links

Google says both features may use query fan-out: they run several related searches across subtopics and data sources, then show supporting links while the answer is generated, often a wider set of links than the classic results. A buyer question like "best CRM for a small agency in Germany" can fan out into searches on price, GDPR, integrations and alternatives. Pages that answer those parts plainly are candidates.

What Google requires, and what it does not

Mentioned in the answer or only linked?

A supporting link is not the same as being named. An AI Overview can link your guide and still recommend a competitor in the text, or name you without linking you. Track both: whether your brand is named in the answer, and whether your domain is among its links.

AI Overviews are not shown for every search

Google shows an AI Overview only for some searches. A question without an AI Overview is not a loss, just not measurable for that engine that week. AI Mode is a separate experience that users open themselves, so it is measured as its own engine.

Which crawlers matter

  • Googlebot

Crawls pages for Google Search, which is where AI Overviews and AI Mode take their links from.

If you block it: The page cannot be indexed and is not eligible for AI Overviews, AI Mode or the classic results.

  • Google-Extended

A control token (not a crawler) for whether Google may use your content to train Gemini models and to ground answers in the Gemini apps.

If you block it: No effect on Google Search inclusion or ranking, including the AI features in Search.

What to do, by evidence

Each step carries an evidence grade, as in every report: A documented by the vendor, B backed by a study, C untested. Start with A and B.

  1. A · documented: The vendor's own documentation describes this.Source: Google Search Central: AI features and your website

Make sure the pages that answer buyer questions are indexed and can show a snippet: no noindex, no nosnippet on them, Googlebot allowed.

  2. A · documented: The vendor's own documentation describes this.Source: Google: robots meta tag, data-nosnippet and max-snippet

Use nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet only where you want to limit what Google shows from a page; they also limit what the AI features can show.

  3. B · studied: An experiment or a large study of AI answers backs it. Not guaranteed for your brand.Source: AI search source study (Chen et al., 2025)

Get onto the third-party pages Google links for your questions. In a large study of AI search answers, Google cited a mix of brand-owned and third-party sources, while the AI assistants leaned on third-party ones.

  4. C · untested: No documented or studied effect yet. Optional.

Cover the sub-questions of your main buyer question on your own pages (price, setup, alternatives, country rules). This follows from query fan-out, but no study has measured the effect.

  5. C · untested: No documented or studied effect yet. Optional.Source: Google Search Central: AI features and your website

Do not expect schema markup or an llms.txt file to get you in. Google says neither is needed for its AI features.

What Nodpick measures in Google AI Overviews & AI Mode

  • Whether the AI Overview or the AI Mode answer names your brand, and in which position.
  • Who is named instead of you, and which domains Google links in the answer.
  • Where your domain ranks in the organic results under the AI Overview, so you see linked and ranked side by side.
  • For how many of your questions Google showed an AI Overview at all. Questions without one are left out of your score instead of counting as a zero.
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode are measured in every paid plan, not in the free check. On paid plans you can also import your Search Console AI impressions next to the score.

How the score and its range work

Common questions

Do I need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says there is no special schema.org structured data and no AI text file you need to add. Structured data still helps where it matches visible content, but it is not a switch for AI Overviews.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google says Google-Extended does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. AI Overviews and AI Mode are part of Search, which Googlebot crawls.

How do I see AI Overview traffic in Search Console?

Google says traffic from its AI features is included in the overall search traffic in the Performance report, under the Web search type. It is not split out there as a separate number.

Why does Google link my page but recommend a competitor?

A link means your page supported part of the answer. Who gets named depends on what the linked pages say about the category. Check the other links in that answer: they usually show where the competitor is described as the fit.

Can I stop Google from using my text in AI Overviews?

You can limit snippets with nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet, or keep a page out with noindex. Each also limits how the page appears in the classic results, so use them with care.
