Gemini SEO: how Gemini finds and names brands

In the free checkEvery paid plan

Gemini can ground its answers in content from Google's Search index, so the same work that makes your pages strong in Google Search helps in Gemini. One switch is specific to Gemini: the Google-Extended token in robots.txt decides whether Google may use your content to ground answers in the Gemini apps and to train Gemini models. Blocking it does not affect Google Search.

Updated

Where Gemini's answers come from

Google describes grounding as providing content from the Google Search index to the model at prompt time, to make answers more factual and relevant. For developers, Google documents the pattern: the model decides whether a search would improve the answer, writes one or more queries, runs them and answers from the results with citations. The Gemini app does not document its pipeline in that detail, but it shows a Sources button with links when it used sources.

The Google-Extended switch

Google-Extended is a product token, not a separate crawler. Disallowing it in robots.txt tells Google not to use content it crawls from your site for training future Gemini models or for grounding in the Gemini apps and in Grounding with Google Search on Vertex AI. Google says it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. So a site that blocks Google-Extended can rank in Google and appear in AI Overviews, yet not be used to ground Gemini's answers. Check your robots.txt before you wonder why Gemini never cites you.

Recommended or only mentioned?

When Gemini answers without sources, it writes from what the model knows, which favors brands that are widely and consistently described on the web. When it grounds in Search, the pages it finds decide. Both point to the same work: consistent facts about you across your site and profiles, and presence on the pages that rank for your buyers' questions.

Which crawlers matter

  • Googlebot

Crawls pages for Google Search, the index Gemini grounds in.

If you block it: Your pages are not in Google's index, so they cannot rank or ground anything.

  • Google-Extended

Control token for using your content to train Gemini models and to ground answers in the Gemini apps.

If you block it: Your content is not used for Gemini training or Gemini app grounding. Google Search inclusion and ranking stay unaffected.

What to do, by evidence

Each step carries an evidence grade, as in every report: A documented by the vendor, B backed by a study, C untested. Start with A and B.

  1. A · documented: The vendor's own documentation describes this.Source: Google: Google's common crawlers (Google-Extended)

Decide on Google-Extended on purpose. If you want Gemini to ground answers in your pages, do not disallow it (check your robots.txt).

  2. A · documented: The vendor's own documentation describes this.Source: Google: Google's common crawlers (Google-Extended)

Keep the pages that answer buyer questions indexable in Google Search, since grounding draws on the Search index.

  3. B · studied: An experiment or a large study of AI answers backs it. Not guaranteed for your brand.Source: AI search source study (Chen et al., 2025)

Get onto the third-party pages that come up for your questions. In a large study of AI search answers, Gemini cited mostly third-party (earned) sources, like the other assistants.

  4. C · untested: No documented or studied effect yet. Optional.

Keep your brand facts identical across your site, Google Business Profile and directories. Sensible for model knowledge, but untested as a fix.

What Nodpick measures in Gemini

  • Whether the answer names your brand, and in which position among the brands it names.
  • Whether it recommends you, only mentions you or warns against you, with a recommendation rate once there are enough answers.
  • Who is named instead of you, and your share of voice against them.
  • Which domains Gemini cites when it uses sources, and whether one of your pages is among them.
  • Gemini is in the free check and in every paid plan.

How the score and its range work

Common questions

Is Gemini the same as Google AI Overviews?

No. AI Overviews and AI Mode are features of Google Search. Gemini is Google's assistant app. Both can draw on the Search index, but they are separate products with separate answers, and Google-Extended affects only Gemini.

Should I block Google-Extended?

Only if you do not want Gemini to train on or ground answers in your content. Google says blocking it does not change your Google Search ranking, but it can keep your pages out of Gemini app answers.

Why does Gemini not show sources for my question?

Google says the Sources button appears when sources are available. Without it, Gemini answered without links, from what the model knows. Those answers favor brands that are described widely and consistently.

Does good Google SEO help in Gemini?

It is the foundation. Grounding uses content from Google's Search index, so pages that are indexed and rank for the sub-questions of your buyer question are the ones Gemini can draw on.
