What is GEO? Generative engine optimization explained
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your brand easy for AI assistants to find, understand and recommend. Where SEO aims for a position in a list of links, GEO aims for a mention inside the answer itself, the place buyers increasingly stop reading. The closely related term AEO (answer engine optimization) is covered in our guide on what AEO is.
How AI assistants build an answer
Assistants with web access search for sources, read a handful of pages and write an answer from them. Without web access they rely on what they learned during training. Either way, they repeat what the web says clearly and consistently about a category.
GEO vs. SEO
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank a page in search results | Be named in the AI's answer |
| Unit of success | Click | Mention and position |
| What helps | Relevance, links, technical quality | Clear facts, comparisons, cited third-party sources, structured data |
| Measurement | Rank trackers, Search Console | Repeated questions across assistants |
GEO and AEO
You will also see this work called AEO, answer engine optimization. The terms overlap heavily and the tasks are largely the same; AEO is the older label, GEO the one more often used for generative assistants. See the guide What is AEO? for the full comparison.
Where to start
- Measure: which questions name you, which name competitors?
- Fix the sources: get listed and reviewed where assistants look (directories, review sites, industry media).
- Publish answer-first pages for each buyer question, plus honest comparison pages.
- Add structured data and an llms.txt summary.
- Re-check weekly, because answers change as the web changes.
