What is parametric knowledge?
Parametric knowledge is what a language model learned during training and stores in its parameters. When an assistant answers without searching the web, it relies on this knowledge, which has a cutoff date and may be incomplete or wrong. Brands that were little discussed before the cutoff are often missing.
Why it matters
Two modes behave differently: with web search the answer draws on current pages, without it only on memory. Improving visibility in the second mode needs wide, long-lived coverage across the web, which takes months.
Example: asked about a young startup without web search, a model says it does not know the company, because it was barely written about before the cutoff.
Measure both
Tracking only the search mode misses what the model believes by default. Note which engines you ask with search on and which without.
Check it for your brand
Nodpick shows how your brand is named across assistants every week, so you see whether what models believe is moving. Run the free AI visibility check to see your own numbers; the method shows how they are made, and pricing lists the plans.
