What is Grounding?
Also: Search grounding, web grounding
Grounding is connecting an AI model's answer to external sources, such as live web search results, so that statements are based on retrieved documents rather than only on training data. Grounded answers can show citations, which is why they matter for brand visibility.
Why grounding matters for brands
Without grounding, an assistant answers from what it learned during training, which can be outdated. With grounding, it searches, reads pages and then writes. That means the pages it retrieves for a question directly shape which brands it names.
Grounding and RAG
Grounding is the goal; retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) is a common technique to achieve it. Nodpick asks assistants with web search switched on, because that is how most buyers use them for recommendations.
