Free llms.txt checker
Enter your domain to see whether your llms.txt exists, follows the proposal (title, summary, sections, link lists) and links to pages that work. If it is missing or weak, you get a starter file to copy.
What a good llms.txt contains
- An H1 with your name: the only required element.
- A blockquote with one or two sentences: what you are, who it is for, where, and for how much.
- H2 sections with link lists in the format - [name](url): short note, for example Key pages.
- An optional ## Optional section for links a reader can skip.
llms.txt is a proposal from llmstxt.org, not an enforced standard. Google says it does not use such files; some agent and coding tools read them. Treat it as ten minutes of housekeeping.
Common questions
What is llms.txt?
llms.txt is a Markdown file at yourdomain.com/llms.txt that summarizes your site and links to your most important pages, written for AI systems. It is a proposal from llmstxt.org, not a standard that every assistant follows (llms.txt guide).
Does llms.txt improve my rankings or AI answers?
There is no evidence that it does. Google's Search Central documentation says you don't need new machine-readable files or AI text files to appear in Google Search, and that creating them neither helps nor harms your visibility there. Some agent and coding tools read the file. Put your real effort into crawlable pages and sources that mention you.
What does the check test?
We fetch /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, check the structure against the proposal (H1 title, blockquote summary, H2 sections, Markdown link lists), look at the size, and send up to 10 HEAD requests to links from your file to see whether they resolve. Links that answer with bot protection are not rated.
Where do I put the file?
At the root of your domain, so it is reachable at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, served as plain text. Check your CMS or hosting: many sites answer unknown URLs with an HTML page, which is not a text file.
Is the check stored?
We store nothing about your domain or the result. To limit abuse we keep a salted hash of your IP address, with a timestamp, for rate limiting.
