What is Citation?

Also: AI citation, source link

A citation is a link or source reference that an AI assistant shows next to its answer to indicate where information came from. Being cited means one of your pages was used as a source. It differs from a mention, where the assistant names your brand without necessarily linking to you.

Citation vs mention

An assistant can recommend your brand while citing a third-party review, or cite your page without naming you as the pick. Both matter, for different reasons. Mentions influence what people remember and search for; citations drive referral traffic and show which sources the assistant trusts.

How to track citations

Record which domains an assistant links to for your buyer questions. If third-party directories or review pages are cited instead of your site, those are the places to improve your presence. Nodpick lists cited domains for every answer it collects.
